London, (Muslim Aid):
Muslim Aid believes every one has the right to literacy because it helps human beings in gaining knowledge, acquiring essential skills, thinking critically and empowering themselves to face challenges in different circumstances. On the occasion of International Literacy Day, Muslim Aid reaffirms its commitment to help those without access to education by establishing schools for the most deprived communities, providing essential equipment to help learning and implementing adult literacy programmes across the world.
A spokesperson for Muslim Aid said: ‘’Literacy has a direct relationship with overall human development. Because literacy changes attitudes and brings new information, it develops new cognitive abilities enabling people to adapt to the social behaviour needed to thrive in modern societies. In the age of wisdom and information technology people prosper due to communication and exchange of ideas. Literacy plays an important role in enabling people across the world to develop socially, economically and culturally. It also helps people in their lifelong learning and to have a better quality of life. Literacy is a tool to eradicate poverty which is the vision statement of Muslim Aid.’’
Millions of people in the 21st century are unable to read or write. There are still many social and cultural barriers due to which millions of boys and girls in the developing world cannot attend school. Muslim Aid’s education programme ranging from pre-school initiatives to adult and vocational education prepares disadvantaged people for a better future and ultimately eradicates poverty in impoverished societies. In 2012, Muslim Aid implemented a rehabilitation programme through which primary education was provided to the children of returning communities of internally displaced persons in Somalia. Muslim Aid has established a number of institutes of technology in Bangladesh and 3 pre-schools in Kurunegala and Mannar districts of Sri Lanka. It has also implemented skills training programmes in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
