Turkey: Ghana clinches 3rd place in Under-20 World Cup

Istanbul: Ebenezer Assifuah’s tournament-leading sixth goal helped Ghana beat Iraq 3-0 in the third-place match of the Under-20 World Cup Saturday.

Assifuah scored Ghana’s second with a low angled shot on halftime.

Defender Joseph Attamah’s header from a corner gave Ghana the lead 10 minutes earlier. Frank Acheampong added the third from a counterattack in the 78th.
The winner in 2009, Ghana was the only former champion left in the semifinals.

Iraq matched its best achievement in a FIFA competition after also coming fourth at the 2004 Athens Olympics. France and Uruguay meet in the final.

S. Africa, Zimbabwe in semis

Favorites South Africa and Zimbabwe endured some anxiety Saturday before reaching the Cosafa Cup semifinals.

‘Bafana Bafana’ (The Boys) overcame bogey team Namibia 2-1 in the second half of a last-eight double-header before a capacity Nkoloma Stadium crowd. And title-holder Zimbabwe was taken to a penalty shootout by 10-man Malawi after a 1-1 draw before advancing in the southern Africa championship.

Copenhagen to meet Hamburg

FC Copenhagen will meet host Hamburg in Sunday’s final of the pre-season Nord Cup after the Danish champion’s 2-1 win over Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg in Saturday’s semifinal.

Czech midfielder Jan Polak gave Wolves a 1-0 lead on 40 minutes, but Copenhagen’s Thomas Kristensen converted a penalty on 45 minutes before Iceland’s Rurik Gislason hit the 54th-minute winner for the Danish league champions.

Hamburg later booked its place in the final after beating Bundesliga new boys Eintracht Braunschweig 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out as the other semifinal finished goalless after extra time.

Jaguars owner Khan takes over Fulham

Shahid Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL franchise, has bought English Premier League Fulham from Mohamed Al-Fayed.

Khan, a billionaire car-parts manufacturer, bought out former Harrods owner Al-Fayed, ending his 16-year spell in control of the London club. Fulham finished 12th in the league last season.

The 62-year-old Khan was born in Pakistan but moved to the United States at 16. — Agencies
