The Hindu: At least 22 people, mostly Hindu pilgrims, were killed when a train ran them over in Bihar on Monday, police said.
The accident occurred when the Rajya Rani Express hit people who were trying to cross railway tracks at Dhamara station in the Khagaria district, area police chief Shiv Kumar Jha said.
“We can confirm that at least 22 people have died,” Jha said by telephone. Those killed were mostly devotees of the Hindu God Shiva who had visited a shrine nearby.
News reports said some more people were hurt and were being taken to hospital. The toll was likely to go up as the condition of some of injured was said to be serious.
Angry locals and pilgrims set on fire two coaches, assaulted the train driver and took railway officials hostage.
According to IANSm situation was tense as hundreds of angry people were agitating at the station.
