Patna, (Hindustan Times): The BJP’s Hunkar rally in Patna on Sunday was overshadowed by series of bomb blasts starting off from a crude bomb explosion at Patna junction platform number 10 followed by seven minor blasts at the historic Gandhi maidan, the venue where the saffron party’s PM candidate Narendra Modi addressed a huge gathering.
Six persons were killed in the serial blasts including one at the Patna Junction while twenty persons were injuired in the serial explosions at the rally ground. All the bombs were triggered off by a timer and planted at three different sides of the historic Gandhi maidan, where few lakhs of rallyists were present setting off panic before the arrival of Modi at the ground.
The serial blasts took place between 10 am and 12.30 am putting the entire state administration into a tizzy with police officials seen carrying the injuired persons to the hospital. Sensing the gravity of the situation, the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh talked with chief minister Nitish Kumar to take stock of the law and order situation in the state even as a team of NIA (national investigation agency) was rushed to the state capital to probe the blasts.
The BJP has already demanded a probe into the blasts calling it a design to create panic and scuttle the rally.
This is the first time, serial blasts have occurred at the Gandhi Maidan during a polical rally in last two decades .
Bihar was witness to a major bomb blast at the Mahabodhi temple in Gaya on July 7th when eight serial blasts of minor intensity took place inside the ancient Buddhist site although nobody was killed.“ We want a probe into the blasts. This is, really, unfortunate ,” said party’s national spokesperson Shahnawaj Hussain.
