India: 20 pilgrims dead as truck falls into gorge

10th Oct 2013

Hoshiarpu, (Hindustan Times): At least 20 people were killed when a mini truck in which they were travelling fell into a 100-foot gorge near Manguwal barrier on the Chintpurni road in Hoshiarpur district late on Wednesday.

Police officer Sukhchain Singh Gill says the accident happened on Thursday as the driver lost control of the vehicle after its brakes failed. The accident took place at 11.30pm but news about it was delayed due to poor mobile connectivity in the area.

Hoshiarpur DSP (City) Digvijay Kapil said nearly 50 pilgrims were travelling in the Tata 407 vehicle.

The victims, most of who belonged to Bajaja village near Bhogpur, were returning from Chintpurni temple after paying obeisance when the accident took place.

Some of the injured victims were rushed to the civil hospital at Gagret in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.

India has the world’s deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
