Bangladesh: 2 killed, 40 wounded in train accident in N E Bangladesh

(The Daily Star): Two passengers were killed and 40 injured when a compartment of Chittagong Mail train derailed in Akhaura Railway Junction of Brahmanbaria early today.

The rail communications of Dhaka with Chittagong and Sylhet remained suspended for more than five hours as seven trains got stuck at different stations following the accident, reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent.

The deceased are identified as Mostakim, 20, of Mymensingh; and Nurul Amin, 35, of Netrakona.

The accident occurred around 2:55am when a compartment of the Chittagong-bound train overturned after being derailed just minutes before the train was due to enter Akhaura Railway Junction, said Md Saidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Akhaura GRP (government railway police) Police Station.

Many passengers were thrown off the compartment due to the impact of the mishap which took place when four wheels of the coach came out of the track.

Mostakim and Amin died on the spot and the 40 more passengers got hurt, the OC added.

The injured were taken to different local hospitals and clinics for treatment.

A committee will be formed soon to investigate the cause of the derailment, said Abdul Motalib, station super of the junction.

The rail service, which came to halt immediately after the derailment, however came to normalcy around 8:25am when a salvage train managed to remove the overturned coach from the track.

Four trains that started from Dhaka had to stay at different places due to the accident.

Chittagong-bound Turna Nishitha Express got stuck in Brahmanbaria station while Sylhet-bound Sylhet Mail at Talshar station, situated in between Akhaura and Brahmanbaria; Sylhet-bound another train Surma Mail at Brahmanbaria and Akhaura-bound Titas in Paghachang, a place in between Brahmanbaria and Akhaura.

Three more Dhaka-bound trains–Turna Nishitha Express from Chittagong, Chittagong Mail train from Akhaura and Demu train from Comilla also stranded at different places
