A suicide bomber killed two people late Sunday in the eastern Lebanese town of al-Nabi Othman in an attack claimed by two separate jihadist groups, state news reported.
Lebanon’s National News Agency said a man travelling in a Jeep Grand Cherokee – a popular vehicle for car bombers – along a main road in the town blew himself up after being asked to stop, killing two people and injuring 14 others.
The report initially said four people were killed, but lowered the death toll after discovering that two casualties originally reported as dead were in critical condition.
The so-called Free Sunni Brigade of Baalbek announced on Twitter that it carried out the bombing in retaliation for Hezbollah’s role in the battle to retake the Syrian city of Yabrud, which was captured Sunday from rebels and reported to be under full control of the Syrian army.
But al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front in Lebanon, which was behind some other car bombings in the country, also posted to Twitter saying it was behind the attack against the “Iranian party” in Lebanon, and accused the Free Sunni Brigade of “lying.”
The NNA identified the victims as Abdel Rahman al-Qadi from the town of al-Ain, Khalil Mahmoud Khalil from Fakiha.
The bombing comes one day after a man was killed and three others wounded in rocket attack targeting al-Nabi Othman in Bekaa Valley, located near the border with Syria.
Saturday’s attack was claimed by the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which was also behind a number of recent suicide bombings in Lebanon.
Jihadist rebels fighting overthrow the Syrian government have increasingly targeted Lebanese areas seen as sympathetic to Hezbollah after the party intervened in the war on the side of the regime.
