Lebanon: Protesters shot, one killed near Iranian embassy in Beirut

9th Jun 2013

Shots were fired near the Iranian embassy in Beirut Sunday, wounding several protesters and killing one, according to media reports.

According to LBCI, several people were wounded at a demonstration by Syrian rebels sympathizers from the Lebanese Option Party.

An army spokesman told the Lebanese National News Agency that one of the demonstrators died as a result of his injuries. The man was identified as Hisham Salman.

According to media reports, an altercation took place between the protesters and a small group of Hezbollah supporters.

The exact course of events regarding who shot at whom and whether embassy guards were involved remained unclear. The number of people injured and the gravity of their wounds is also unknown.

The Lebanese army reportedly cordoned off the area near the Iranian embassy in the Bir Hassan neighborhood soon after the confrontations, the NNA reported.

Several protests were planned for Sunday in the Lebanese capital and the southern city of Saida, organized by groups who oppose Hezbollah’s involvement in Syria by the side of President Bashar al-Assad.

Despite heavy security in downtown Beirut, a protest planned for noon in Martyrs’ Square recorded low attendance during the early afternoon.

Al-Jamaa Islamiya, teamed up with local Salafi cleric Ahmad al-Assir, is set to hold a rally in Saida on Sunday evening to express their “solidarity with the Syrian revolution” and “rejection of Hezbollah’s intervention in the fighting in Syria.
