Lebanon: Child killed in renewed Tripoli clashes

Gunmen shot dead a motorist in Lebanon’s northern city of Tripoli Wednesday, causing his car to veer off the road where it struck a woman, killing her instantly, an Al-Akhbar correspondent and state media reported.

The woman’s son was also hit, but survived the incident, which reignited a new round of deadly clashes between rival neighborhoods in the city that led to the death of an 11-year-old boy.

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) said unidentified gunmen shot dead Hassan Mazloum, a resident from the Jabal Mohsen neighborhood in an apparent sectarian killing.

Jabal Mohsen’s Alawi residents frequently come under attack from salafis and other extremists based in the neighboring Bab al-Tabbaneh.

Fighting erupted between the neighborhoods following Mazloum’s killing after two days of relative calm. Approximately 30 people have been killed in the clashes since March 13.

The NNA said 11-year-old Ahmed al-Sayyed was killed by snipers in the clashes, while a man identified as Mahmoud Fakhreddine was shot in the head and rushed to a hospital.

Before the clashes erupted, an Al-Akhbar correspondent said she witnessed a crowd of men from Bab al-Tabbaneh descend to the Islamic Hospital where Mazloum’s corpse was transferred in an attempt to collect and burn it, but were prevented from entering by security forces.

Meanwhile residents from Mazloum’s home village in the northern Lebanese town of Haysa shut down a major road with burning tires to protest his killing.

It was later reopened by the army.

Extremists from Bab al-Tabbaneh have in recent months escalated a series of sectarian attacks against Alawi residents of Jabal Mohsen.
