Iraq: 17 killed, 25 wounded in attacks in Iraq

BAGHDAD, (Xinhua): At least 17 people were killed and 25 others wounded in separate attacks in Iraq on Saturday, said the police.

Five Iraqi policemen were killed when a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt blew himself up at a police checkpoint in Ramadi, capital of Anbar province, some 100 km west of Baghdad, a police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The attack also wounded four other policemen and three civilians, the source added.

One policeman and a civilian were killed when unidentified gunmen attacked their car in Falluja, just 50 km west of Baghdad, while two girls were killed and their father and brother were wounded when their car was hit by a roadside bomb in Dujal, 70 km north of Baghdad, the source said.

Two farmers were killed and two others wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in a farm in Diyala province, he said, adding that three people were wounded when a roadside bomb went off near a market in Madain, 30 km south Baghdad.

Also, one worshipper was killed and four others were wounded when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them after they went out of a mosque in the Al Jamiaa district in western Baghdad, while six civilians were wounded in a roadside bomb attack in the Amiriyaa area in western Baghdad, the source said.

Earlier in the day, unidentified gunmen stormed into a small mosque in the New Baghdad area in eastern Baghdad and opened fire on six old men praying there, killing five of them and wounding the other, another police source told Xinhua.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years, which raises fears that the country is sliding back to full- blown civil conflict that peaked in 2006 and 2007, when monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.
