BAGHDAD, (Xinhua): At least 15 people were killed and 35 others wounded in a bomb attack in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Sunday, police said.

The attack occurred when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a funeral in the Dora district in southern Baghdad, a police source told Xinhua.

Earlier in the day, at least eight people were killed and 58 others wounded in violent attacks in Iraq as the country is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years.

Four young men were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them at a refreshment shop in the Adhamiya district in northern Baghdad, a police source told Xinhua.

In a similar attack, two young men were shot dead by gunmen with silencer-mounted weapons in the Mashtil area in southeastern Baghdad, the source add.

Two policemen were killed and two others wounded when a roadside bomb struck their patrol in Eaid village near the city of Mosul, some 400 km north Baghdad, a local police source said.

Up to 51 people were injured when a car bomb exploded near the Directorate of Education in central Kirkuk, 250 km north of Baghdad, the source said.

Five policemen were injured when a suicide bomber attacked their patrol in western Kirkuk, he add.

The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq said earlier this month that almost 5,000 civilians were killed and 12,000 others injured in Iraq from January to August this year.
