Tehran, IRNA: Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said Tuesday that Iran welcomes Moscows initiative to resolve the Syrian crisis.
She made the remark at her weekly news conference, adding Iran believes that the initiative is in line with moves to halt militarization in the region.
Iran, she said, is against the use of chemical weapons and is seeking a region free from nuclear arms.
She said Tehran is concerned that terrorist groups in Syria possess chemical weapons.
Afkham underlined the need for settlement of the Syrian crisis through diplomacy.
Russia, on Monday, proposed Syria to put its chemical weapons under international control for subsequent destruction to avert a possible US military strike. The proposal was welcomed by Damascus.
