Afghanistan: Eight civilians killed in blast near Indian consulate in eastern Afghan city

3rd Aug 2013

JALALABAD, (Xinhua): At least eight Afghan civilians were killed and 22 others wounded Saturday in a suicide car bombing near the Indian consulate in Jalalabad, capital of eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar, police said.

The blast took place at around 10:00 a.m. local time about 50 meters away from the consulate in the city, 120 km east of the Afghan capital Kabul, the provincial police chief Sharifullah Amin told Xinhua.

The bomber tried to assault the consulate building but his explosive went off minutes before arriving at the compound, he said.

No damages were inflicted on the consulate and no Indian staff was hurt in the blast, sources said.

Afghan security forces sealed off the blast site.

The blast sent a plume of grey smoke above the scene, and damaged several houses and shops nearby.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
