Sudan: Over 40,000 South Sudanese refugees arrive in Sudan

7th Mar 2014

KHARTOUM, (Xinhua): The number of South Sudanese refugees arriving in Sudan has reached between 40,000 to 42,000, the UN humanitarian affairs office said on Thursday.

A weekly report released by the UN Office says that humanitarian organizations have provided assistance and food for the South Sudanese refugees in border areas between Sudan and South Sudan.

South Sudan has been witnessing violence and armed clashes between government forces of President Salva Kiir Mayardit and rebels loyal to former Vice-President Riek Machar since December last year.

The UN High Commission for Refugees on Wednesday warned against a food crisis in South Sudan.

It said that the crisis would aggravate, as the number of refugees depending on food assistance is estimated to reach about 3.2 million next June.

The commission estimated that about 739,000 people had been displaced within South Sudan as a result of the fighting there. More than 196,000 people have fled the country.
