LAGOS, (Xinhua): Dozens of people died and several trailers, including a tanker loaded with petrol, were completely burnt in a road crash along the southwest Lagos-Ibadan expressway late Saturday, officials said Sunday.
The accident also caused a prolonged gridlock as motor vehicles heading toward southwest city of Ibadan had to move at snail speed.
Joseph Samgbaza, unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), said the accident happened as a reel of paper fell off a truck on the expressway and a trailer rammed into it.
“Three other trailers, one conveying fertilizer, one carrying can drinks and the last conveying 33,000 liters of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) rammed over each other and everything went up in flames,” he added.
Road accidents are frequent in Nigeria due to reckless driving, bad road conditions and over-packing, with more than 1,000 killed on the road each year in the country.
