Libya: Clashes erupt in Libya’s Tripoli, blast kills officer in Benghazi

27th Jun 2013

TRIPOLI, (Xinhua): Clashes erupted in the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Wednesday between two armed groups, as deadly violent acts hit the eastern city of Benghazi.

Fighting broke out after a bunch of militants from the western city of Zintan, reportedly members of a local military council that fought against loyalists of ex-leader Muammar Gaddafi in the 2011 civil war, tried to release five of their fellows, who were arrested on Tuesday by the former rebels in the Tripoli district of Abu Salim.

Meanwhile, casualties have risen to five dead and 22 injured after a Tuesday attack by some Zintan gunmen, who assaulted the headquarters of the Libyan Petroleum Facilities Guards in Tripoli, according to an official statement. The initial toll was one killed and five injured.

Also on Wednesday, in Benghazi, an army intelligence officer died after a bomb planted in his car exploded, according to security sources.

The incidents are adding to the unrest to be dealt with by Nuri Abusahmain, the new head of the country’s top political institution, the General National Congress, who was elected on Tuesday.
