Algeria: 6 killed, 30 injured in Algerian tribal clashes

16th Aug 2013

ALGIERS, (Xinhua): At least six people were killed and 30 others injured in tribal clashes in the Algerian province of Adrar, some 1,400 southwest of the capital Algiers, a provincial official said Thursday.

Secretary-General of Adrar province Abdelkader El Baradei told reporters that the clashes that had erupted on Tuesday night in Bordj Badji Mokhtar locality left six people dead and 30 injured, including six in critical conditions.

On Wednesday, official APS news agency quoted governor of Adrar Ahmed Abdelhafid Saci as saying that the clashes took place between an Arab tribe and Tuareg residents (Amazigh origins), killing 4 people and injuring 22 others.

Saci said the clashes started as a fight between a robber and a store owner and later developed into a mass confrontation after the intervention of the two men’s relatives.

The governor added he held a meeting with the elders of the local tribes in a bid to restore calm to the region.
